Topic:

Data Transparency Legislation: New Opportunities for Data Management

Abstract:

In 2014, the US Congress unanimously passed, and President Obama signed, the most sweeping government management reform in a quarter-century. The Digital Accountability and Transparency Act, or DATA Act, directs the federal government to transform all of its spending information from disconnected documents into open, standardized data.

The DATA Act is only the beginning. Congress is poised to mandate standardized data in other areas, too, starting with financial services regulation, with the introduction in May 2015 of the Financial Transparency Act. These federal policy changes offer new opportunities for government and private-sector organizations to use data standards to drive better data management and better data quality.
